Conclusion

Project Summary

The osTicket IT Support Service Desk Lab provided a practical environment for developing and demonstrating core IT Support and Service Desk skills.

The project went beyond installing a ticketing platform. It involved configuring a functional service desk, creating a Knowledge Base, managing support tickets, reproducing technical issues, performing structured troubleshooting, documenting findings, communicating with users, verifying resolutions, and closing incidents.

What Was Demonstrated

The completed project demonstrates practical experience with:

  • IT Service Desk workflows
  • Ticket management
  • Incident triage
  • Ticket assignment
  • SLA awareness
  • Help Topics
  • Knowledge Base management
  • Windows troubleshooting
  • Application troubleshooting
  • Network and DNS diagnostics
  • Windows permissions
  • Windows language configuration
  • Technical documentation
  • Customer communication
  • Resolution verification

Practical Troubleshooting Experience

Four support incidents were investigated and documented:

Ticket| Scenario| Outcome

795308| Connected to Wi-Fi but No Internet Access| Connectivity verified; issue not reproduced during final testing

354151| Black Screen After Login| Windows desktop restored

582292| Zoom Microphone Access Issue| Microphone access restored

506980| Amharic Keyboard Layout Setup| Amharic input configured and verified

The incidents provided experience across different areas of Level 1 IT Support rather than focusing on a single technical problem.

Evidence-Based Support

A central principle throughout the project was that troubleshooting should be based on evidence.

The process used was:

Symptom → Investigation → Evidence → Diagnosis → Resolution → Verification

This approach helped avoid unnecessary configuration changes and made the troubleshooting process more repeatable.

The network troubleshooting case was particularly useful in demonstrating that a reported problem does not automatically identify its root cause. Diagnostic testing showed that DNS resolution and external connectivity were functioning during the investigation, so no unsupported network configuration change was made.

Service Desk Perspective

The project also demonstrated that IT Support involves more than technical troubleshooting.

A complete support process requires:

Ownership + Communication + Documentation + Technical Resolution + Verification

The ticketing system provided a structured way to manage those activities and maintain a record of the incident from creation through closure.

Portfolio Value

This project represents a practical demonstration of skills relevant to entry-level and junior roles such as:

  • IT Support Technician
  • IT Support Specialist
  • Help Desk Technician
  • Service Desk Analyst
  • Desktop Support Technician
  • Technical Support Technician
  • Junior Network Support Technician

It is intended to complement formal education and previous hands-on experience by providing visible evidence of practical troubleshooting and Service Desk workflow knowledge.

Future Improvements

If the lab were expanded into a more advanced Service Desk environment, potential improvements could include:

  • Active Directory integration
  • Centralized user and computer management
  • Group Policy configuration
  • Automated ticket notifications
  • More detailed SLA policies
  • Additional hardware troubleshooting scenarios
  • Remote support workflows
  • Asset management
  • Ticket reporting and metrics
  • Escalation procedures
  • More complex networking incidents

These additions would provide opportunities to develop the environment toward a more enterprise-oriented support model.

Final Reflection

The project demonstrated that effective IT Support is a combination of technical troubleshooting, structured processes, documentation, and communication.

The most valuable outcome was developing a repeatable approach to technical problems: «Understand the issue, investigate systematically, use evidence to identify the cause, apply an appropriate solution, verify the result, document the work, and communicate clearly.»

This Service Desk lab provides a foundation for continuing to develop those skills in a professional IT Support environment.
